L-Valine (แอล-วาลีน)

Valine (abbreviated as Val or V) is an α-amino acid with the chemical formula HO₂CCH(NH₂)CH(CH₃)₂. L-Valine is one of 20 proteinogenic amino acids. Its codons are GUU, GUC, GUA, and GUG. This essential amino acid is classified as nonpolar. Human dietary sources are any proteinaceous foods such as meats, dairy products, soy products, beans and legumes.Along with leucine and isoleucine, valine is a branched-chain amino acid. It is named after the plant valerian. In sickle-cell disease, valine substitutes for the hydrophilic amino acid glutamic acid in hemoglobin. Because valine is hydrophobic, the hemoglobin is prone to abnormal aggregation.

      กรดอะมิโนจำเป็นชนิดนี้ถูกจัดอยู่ในกลุ่มไม่มีขั้ว แหล่งอาหารที่สำคัญสำหรับมนุษย์คืออาหารที่มีโปรตีนทุกชนิด เช่น เนื้อสัตว์, ผลิตภัณฑ์นม, ผลิตภัณฑ์จากถั่วเหลือง, ถั่วฝักเมล็ดกลม และพืชตระกูลถั่ว วาลีนจัดเป็นกรดอะมิโนโซ่กิ่ง เช่นเดียวกับลูซีนและไอโซลูซีน โดยชื่อของมันมีที่มาจากพืชที่ชื่อว่า วาเลอเรียน
      ในโรคเม็ดเลือดแดงรูปเคียว (Sickle-cell disease) วาลีนจะเข้าไปแทนที่กรดกลูตามิก ซึ่งเป็นกรดอะมิโนชนิดชอบน้ำ ในโครงสร้างของฮีโมโกลบิน และเนื่องจากวาลีนมีคุณสมบัติไม่ชอบน้ำ จึงส่งผลให้ฮีโมโกลบินเกิดการเกาะกลุ่มกันอย่างผิดปกติ
